Our Curriculum

Physical Education

Our overall intent is that pupils when they leave Y6 will have developed a love of sport and PE. We want them to demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices (including positive mental health), be active participants in different types of games, be competent in a range of activities, not be afraid to have a go at new challenges and be prepared to challenge themselves to improve.

Through PE, we develop fundamental movement skills; an understanding of rules and tactics in a range of games; and an enjoyment of healthy competition through intra and inter school competitions.

Knowledge is divided into 2 key parts: substantive (knowledge about what skills to use); and disciplinary (knowledge of how to apply them).

PE is a key subject where we promote Building Learning Power skills: children are constantly encouraged to develop perseverance, collaboration, imitation, empathy, interdependence, manage distractions, capitalise, plan, imagine, develop meta-learning and their ability to notice.  We want children to feel that they belong to a loving, extended school family and through the exploration of a range of physical activities, this supports children to explore and develop their strengths in order to develop strong foundations towards developing a positive healthy lifestyle and well-being.

Our golden threads are: motor competence; rules, strategies and tactics; a positive healthy lifestyle and well-being; and utilising a wide range of BLP skills to best of my ability to be an effective team player.

For PE, we follow the Striver scheme of learning.  This not only teaches PE but support our Health education learning through teaching well-being. The documents below show the progressive key learning that takes place in this subject across all key stages.

We prioritise PE.  Each class receives a whole afternoon of PE per week which is taught by a PE specialist.  In addition to this, children in KS2 wear Moki Bands to track and record their active minutes.   At playtimes and lunchtimes, our ATAs and TAs encourage pupils to be active using a range of equipment.   Our Playground Managers (some of our older pupils) take their role very seriously and devise skill-based games for pupils to further develop what they have been practising in their PE lessons; this is always lovely to watch as they manage to get so many children involved across the years.

All children are given the opportunity to swim for at least a term each year.
