Our overall intent is that pupils when they leave Y6 are well developed in mathematical fluency; they can reason confidently using precise mathematical language and can apply these efficiently to solve a wide range of problems. They leave knowing facts and formula; being able to competently use efficient methods; and to be able to apply these when reasoning and problem solving.
Teaching Building Learning Power skills within maths is also at the core of our pedagogy. Children are constantly encouraged to develop perseverance, collaboration, imitation, interdependence, manage distractions, capitalise, plan, revise, be absorbed and develop their ability to notice and make links. Making links is essential both within maths across its different strands and across the whole curriculum. It is important to our pupils that they see that maths is an essential, multi-discipline life-skill; making links also helps to cement their mathematical knowledge in their long term memory.
We teach mathematics using the Maths Mastery approach which includes: representation and structure; mathematical thinking; variation; fluency; and underpinning it all, small steps of learning. For Maths, we follow the latest White Rose scheme of learning. This scheme breaks down each mathematical concept into very small steps of learning. The documents below show the progressive key learning that takes place in this subject across all key stages.
We have a subscription to Maths Shed and TTRockstars.
In addition to the White Rose maths, EYFS, Y1 and Y2 follow the Mastering Number programme.
