At Aiskew, Leeming Bar CE Primary school we follow the National Curriculum for Maths.
The curriculum is divided into the following areas :
Number : place value;
Number: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division;
Number: Fractions (including decimals and percentages);
Ratio and Proportion and Algebra (for the oldest pupils).
Geometry : Properties of shapes; position and direction;
Throughout all areas children learn how to apply the skills learned through reasoning questions and problem solving.
Children regularly practise arithmetic skills, in addition to mental maths such are counting forwards and backwards with the younger children and learning times table facts and their associated division facts with the older children.
We have a Mathletics subscription. The children regularly get the opportunity to use this resource to consolidate learning and to practise mental maths. Children are encouraged to access this resource at home and come to breaktime clubs to use this too. Children’s achievements using Mathletics are celebrated weekly in our celebration assembly and in the newsletter. Each week, we award a Mathlete of the week certificate for the pupil who has earned the most points.
The staff, in school, have established calculation guidance. This explains our approach to teaching calculations and is available on the website.
